Minerals in Water and Soil: The Lost Foundation of the Healing Terrain
Modern food grows in depleted soil. Modern water flows through pipes, not stone. And the terrain is paying the price.

A hundred years ago, the mineral content of food was a given. Plants drew minerals from living soil through root systems that extended metres into the earth. Animals grazed on mineral-rich pasture. Water flowed over rock and picked up the ionic minerals that rock yields to moving water over time. Human beings consumed minerals in forms and quantities that the terrain evolved over millions of years to depend on.
That world is, for most people in the industrialised world, gone. Monocultural farming has stripped topsoil of its mineral content. Chemical fertilisers provide nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but not the trace minerals that make a healthy soil ecology. Municipal water is filtered, chlorinated, and piped through materials that strip what little mineral content remains. The result is a terrain that is chronically, subclinically, and pervasively mineral depleted, in ways that no single supplement can fully address but that can be meaningfully supported with the right understanding.
Understanding Mineral Depletion Through the Terrain
The USDA has documented a decline of between 25% and 80% in the mineral content of fruits and vegetables over the past 50 to 70 years, depending on the mineral and the crop. A carrot grown in 1950 is not nutritionally equivalent to a carrot grown today. The soil it was grown in was different. The relationship between plant roots, soil fungi (mycorrhizal networks), bacteria, and mineral availability has been profoundly disrupted by industrial agriculture.
Water tells a similar story. Natural spring water, aquifer water, and river water that has flowed over mineral-rich geology can be significant sources of ionic minerals including silica, magnesium, calcium, bicarbonate, lithium, and trace elements. Municipal tap water, and particularly reverse osmosis filtered water, provides almost none of these. We have made our water cleaner, in the sense of removing contaminants, and simultaneously emptier, in the sense of removing the minerals that gave water its biological value.
The terrain consequences of this background mineral depletion are difficult to isolate from all the other disruptions of modern life, but they are woven through virtually every chronic condition: magnesium depletion contributing to sleep disruption, anxiety, cardiovascular risk, and blood sugar dysregulation; iodine depletion contributing to thyroid dysfunction; zinc depletion contributing to immune vulnerability and poor wound healing; selenium depletion contributing to mercury accumulation and thyroid impairment.
Layer One: The Macrominerals and Cellular Terrain
Magnesium is the mineral most acutely and universally depleted in modern terrains. It is required as a co-factor in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including DNA repair, protein synthesis, ATP production, and the regulation of calcium and potassium channels across cell membranes. Subclinical magnesium deficiency, below the level that shows up on standard serum testing, is estimated to affect the majority of the population in industrialised countries.
Calcium is rarely deficient in Western diets, but the ratio of calcium to magnesium is frequently imbalanced toward excess calcium and deficient magnesium. This imbalance has significant consequences for the terrain: excess calcium relative to magnesium contributes to calcification of soft tissues, arterial stiffness, muscle cramping, and the dysregulation of the cellular calcium-magnesium balance that underlies optimal cellular function.
Potassium, the primary intracellular electrolyte, is depleted by processed food diets low in fruits and vegetables. Sodium-potassium balance governs cellular hydration, nerve impulse transmission, and kidney function.
THE MACROMINERALS AND CELLULAR TERRAIN: SUPPORT PROTOCOL

Selenium is a co-factor in glutathione peroxidase, the enzyme that converts glutathione into its active antioxidant form, and is one of the primary protective factors against thyroid dysfunction and heavy metal toxicity. Iodine is required not only for thyroid hormone synthesis but for the health of every cell in the body, particularly glandular tissue.
The challenge with trace minerals is that their interactions are complex. Zinc and copper compete for absorption. Selenium and mercury form stable complexes that prevent mercury toxicity but can deplete bioavailable selenium. Iron excess impairs zinc absorption. The deepest layer of mineral terrain work is understanding that our mineral depletion is not only personal. It is ecological. The soil of the planet is being depleted at a rate that has no historical precedent. Topsoil takes approximately 500 years to form one inch. Industrial agriculture can destroy that inch in a single decade of monocultural cultivation.
